Whirligigs
Whirligigs have become part of American art and Folklore for centuries. But long before the Mayflower arrived, whirligigs were spinning in Europe. The Oxford English Dictionary refers to the "whyrlegyge" as far back as the 15th century. But certainly before this word came into common usage, whirligigs had been in existence. The Chinese had pinwheels that may have traveled across Asia to arrive in Europe about the 13th century. These spinning propellers were the inspiration for windmills and may have given a woodworker of old the idea of adding propellers to a weathervane creating the first whirligig.
Our whirlygigs come in three sizes: small, medium and large. Small whirlygigs are made for a table, your desk at work, or a mantle. They also look great on our curio shelves. Small whirlygigs come with their own stand and are between 6 and 8 inches long. Medium whirlygigs are perfect for your deck or garden. Order them with our Deck-Rail Mount or Garden-Stake Mount and they can be placed anywhere for years of enjoyment. Put one on your picnic table with our Picnic-Table Mount for a real conversation piece at the next family gathering. Medium-sized whirlygigs are between 8 and 12 inches long and come unmounted. Order the mount of your choice. Large whirlygigs look great in the lawn or garden. Large enough to be seen, they will not be lost in a large area. Because of their wingspan, large whirlygigs can only be mounted on the Garden-Stake Mount. Large whirlygigs are between 18 and 24 inches long, order the Garden-Stake Mount separately.
